Rwanda is a beautiful and diverse country with a rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and incredible wildlife. The country is located in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa where the African Great Lakes region and the southeast Africa converge. Lying a few degrees south of the Equator, Rwanda is bordered by several countries like Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Due to its high elevation, the country was named the land of thousand hills. Its geography is dominated by mountains in the west and then savannah in the southeast with lakes in different regions.
With a total area of 26,338 square kilometers, Rwanda is known for encompassing a number of tourist destinations in different areas. These include national parks, reserves, lakes, mountains, and cities. Of all these, there are five destinations that should not miss on one’s collection during the preparation of the Rwanda safari and they are listed below;
- Volcanoes National Park
Located in the northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is one of the best destinations to visit. With a total area of approximately 160 square kilometers, the park encompasses the thick rain forests that host the incredible creatures – mountain gorillas that are watched during gorilla trekking experience. Also, the park encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in Virunga mountains – Mount Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo and was also the base for the primatologist Dian Fossey.
In addition to gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is also home to the endangered golden monkeys, which you can track and observe. These shy and cute creatures can also be seen during the golden monkey tracking experience that also involves hiking through the park rainforests and once you find them, you will be allowed to take beautiful pictures and videos for remembrance.

- Nyungwe Forest National Park
In the southwestern region of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is another destination in Rwanda that attracts thousand of visitors. The park protects the oldest and most preserved montane rainforests on the African continent – Nyungwe. The forests are on the border with Burundi where it is contiguous with Kibira national park to the south, Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.
With a total surface area of 1,019 meters, Nyungwe forest national park is a home to a large population of chimpanzees that can be observed during a fascinating chimpanzee trekking experience. Aside chimps, the park also protects other 12 primate species, over 275 bird species, 85 mammal species, 32 amphibian and 38 reptiles.

Still in the forests, one can also take part in the unique canopy walk that offers an exhilarating experience, allowing you to walk high above the forest floor for a unique perspective.
- Akagera National Park
This is a protected area in eastern Rwanda located along the international border with Tanzania. The park was named after River Kagera that flows along the eastern boundary feeding into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes.
Gazetted in 1934, the Akagera Park is known for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species. You can embark on game viewing safaris to spot these animals in their natural habitat. Also, there are other activities to do in the park including boat cruise on Lake Ihema, nature walk, bird watching and others.
- Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and offers a picturesque setting for relaxation. The lake lies on the border between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. It empties into River Ruzizi, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. While at the great lake, you can enjoy activities like swimming, kayaking, boat trips, and lakeside dining while taking in the stunning views.
- Kigali
This is the largest and capital city of Rwanda. With a total area of 730 square kilometers, the city is known for its elevating geography with rolling hills, series of valleys and ridges that are joined by steep slopes. Kigali is a home to a number of amazing attractions that are definitely worthy the visit and among these include; Kigali Genocide memorial which is an important place to learn more about the history of Rwanda which includes the genocide monarchy of 1994 where thousands of people lost their lives mercilessly. Other places include the Inema Arts Center, the contemporary art space that showcases the vibrant artistic talent in Rwanda. It’s a great place to appreciate local art and culture. Also, Kigali is a home to different markets where you can buy afford and amazing items, museums and others.
